My grandmother was 92 when she learned to use a tablet. She hated not being able to watch extra content after her favourite TV show, so we bought her a tablet and set up her internet. Her curiosity and drive to stay connected to the world around her kept her learning and exploring. That’s the essence of lifelong learning—staying curious and adaptable to new challenges and opportunities, no matter your age.
Today, on International Day of Education, with its theme “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation,” we are reminded of education’s power to help us navigate and shape the rapid changes brought by technology. With AI evolving at lightning speed and impacting every aspect of life, the need for lifelong learning is more urgent than ever.
Why lifelong learning matters
The UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning highlights that education is a right for all ages, emphasising the importance of adapting to societal, environmental, and technological changes. AI, in particular, is transforming industries and redefining the skills required in the workplace.
But adapting to these changes isn’t just about acquiring technical knowledge—it’s about maintaining a curious, open mind and critically engaging with new developments. Education provides us with the tools to evaluate and use AI ethically, ensuring it complements human creativity rather than replacing it.
Are you curious to learn from AI?
In my experience, learning takes many forms. Theoretical learning through university, courses, and expert blogs offers a solid foundation. Researching and experimenting deepens your understanding. Writing, for example, is an excellent way to refine ideas—although I wouldn’t necessarily recommend starting with a book!
When I started experimenting with AI, I was not just learning about AI, but rather learning from AI. I realised AI enhanced my abilities rather than replacing them. AI can spark creativity, provide insights and help me get more out of my day. Following my grandmother’s example, I’ve found that staying open-minded and curious allows to make the most of these advancements.
