How Kairos drives impactful change
In life and business, success often depends on timing, seizing the right moment. The ancient Greek concept of Kairos—the “right moment”—highlights the importance of acting when conditions are most favorable. Unlike Chronos, which measures chronological time, Kairos focuses on finding the opportune moment for meaningful action.
The COVID-19 pandemic provided a Kairos moment for many organizations, including mine. At the time, I was a global communications leader working closely with our Learning & Development Director, driving a learning culture. Together, we recognized the opportunity to introduce “learn from home” initiatives.
Seizing the right moment: Turning resistance into momentum
Before the pandemic, enthusiasm for online learning was low. Internal training relied on in-person meetings, limiting accessibility and participation. However, the sudden shift to remote work opened the door for change. Within a week, we launched a simple intranet site offering available digital learning materials. We also partnered with universities to provide additional, relevant content.
Building a lasting legacy
This quick action sparked enthusiasm for online learning across the organization. The Learning & Development team used this momentum to build a business case for a fully digital learning platform. Eventually, they integrated this platform into the HR system, allowing for personalized employee development plans.
This transformation demonstrates how recognizing and acting on a Kairos moment can drive cultural change. By responding to the right moment, we reshaped our company’s approach to learning and development, creating a sustainable and scalable solution for the future.
